Posted in Event, Going Out! on June 23rd, 2008 by Kyle / No Comments »

I know the fourth is still a little bit away, but it is never too late to start planning your evening. Whatever you decide to do you should probably start early. The last few years I’ve gone to Gas works park and it was an amazing show. It can get a little crowded but is worth it. Here is some more information if you are interested in attending the park.

and the National Anthem performed by Francine Reed
Live KING 5 TV Broadcast Back in HDTV!
Express Access and Dedicated Bike Parking for Those Who Pedal to the Park
Seattle, WA – For the seventh consecutive year, Seattle-based Washington Mutual will present
the WaMu Family 4th at Lake Union’s Gas Works Park (2101 N. Northlake Way). The free
admission, full day, family tradition takes place from noon to 11pm on Independence Day and
features the WaMu Playfield, a wide menu of food offerings, and a lakeside beer garden for those
21 and over. This year’s event will also feature a performance of the National Anthem by esteemed
blues and jazz singer Francine Reed and a Lake Union flyover by a Fort Lewis-based Army Reserve
Chinook helicopter. The day-long celebration culminates at approximately 10pm with a worldrenowned
fireworks show within the natural amphitheater of Lake Union. This year’s event will be
the 20th time Seattle’s 4th of July celebration has been produced by One Reel, the not for profit arts
and events organization behind Bumbershoot and Teatro ZinZanni. Other event sponsors include
Starbucks Coffee Company and Courtyard by Marriott Lake Union. More information is available at
wamufamily4th.org.
DAYTIME ACTIVITIES
WaMu Playf ield: The Gas Works Park lawn hosts free fun at the WaMu Playfield: a kind of allday
recess for both kids and adults featuring activities such as the high-flying Extreme Air Quad
Pod, the Amazama Juggling School, enormous inflatable animal slides, and clown-hosted potato
sack races and tug-o-war. Favorite hands-on activities too with Rock Band gaming and photos at
the WaMu exhibit, plus kite making (and flying!) and face painting.
Street Scramble: Families and friends can team up in search of 30 destinations around Gas
Works Park and the Wallingford neighborhood, earning points along the way. This fun Street
Scramble can be done on foot or by bike. Registration begins at noon with teams departing at 2pm.
Sign up for either the 90-minute or 3-hour option (at Gas Works Park in the designated bike
parking area) on July 4th or in advance at streetscramble.com.
Red, White and “Blue Thunder”: The Seattle Seahawks’ incomparable drumline “Blue
Thunder” will parade through the park to kick off the fireworks celebration. Event activities will
also include dazzling dance routines by the SeaGals and the opportunity to meet Blitz, the team’s
mascot, at the Seahawks booth.
Francine Reed: The 2008 WaMu Family 4th is thrilled to have jazz and blues singer Francine
Reed performing the National Anthem. Reed has toured solo and as an acclaimed member of Lyle
Lovett’s Large Band. Reed returns to Seattle this summer for her sixth engagement with Teatro
ZinZanni, June 26 – October 19 in “Quest for a Queendom.”
Chinook Helicopter Flyover: One of the many favorite traditions of the WaMu Family 4th is
the inspiring sight of an Army Reserve Chinook helicopter, flying a 30’ x 60’ US flag while circling
over Lake Union to the sound of Ray Charles’ rendition of “America the Beautiful.” This year’s
flyover will be handled by “A” Company, Fifth of the 159th Aviation Regiment (“The Hookers”)
from the United States Army Reserve of Fort Lewis, Washington.
Vendors: A variety of food and beverage vendors will be open from noon to 10pm featuring
time-honored holiday menu choices of hot dogs, hamburgers, roasted corn, and ice cream.
Additional options include pizza, BBQ, gyros, and elephant ears as well as non-alcoholic beverages,
coffee drinks and smoothies.
Beer Garden: Beer and wine will be available in the lakeside beer garden from noon to
9:30pm. Proper ID must be presented. In addition, beer garden guests can compete in two rounds
of trivia for prizes, beginning at 4pm, courtesy of Fadó Irish Pub and Restaurant.
FIREWORKS DISPLAY
The day’s festivities will culminate at approximately 10pm with the highly anticipated fireworks
display, orchestrated by master pyrotechnic designer Eric Tucker of Pyro Spectaculars. The
fireworks team has spent the last year hand selecting the most awe inspiring fireworks from around
the world for display in Seattle this 4th of July.
The fireworks show is perfectly synchronized to an original score amplified throughout the park
featuring patriotic anthems, celebratory songs, and family favorite hits spanning decades. Those
viewing the display from around Lake Union are encouraged to listen to the soundtrack simulcast on
local radio stations 106.1 KISS FM, 96.5 JACK FM, and KZOK 102.5 FM. KING 5 TV will once
again broadcast the WaMu Family 4th at Lake Union live in HDTV beginning at 10pm.
GETTING THERE
There are multiple ways to get to the WaMu Family 4th! Attendees are encouraged to walk or ride
their bikes to the park to avoid post-fireworks traffic congestion. Cyclists can enter through an
express access bike entrance on the northwest side of the park and take advantage of the dedicated
bike parking area inside. There are many trails that go to and from Gas Works Park; for maps and
more transportation details visit wamufamily4th.org.

Art Walks!

Posted in Event, Going Out! on June 22nd, 2008 by Kyle / No Comments »

7/8: Put a little funk into your art walk and check out the Capitol Hills funky demeanor through burlesques, paintings, video art, photography, quilting, belly dancing and more. Events, art, and activities take place at Aria Salon, Babeland, Bad JuJu Lounge, Galactic Boutique, Retail Therapy, Retrofit Home and Stitches, among others. All businesses donate treats for the 2Tues Scavenger Hunt prize gift basket each month.

Walk starts @

Babeland

707 E Pike St
Seattle, WA 98122
Phone: (206) 328-2914

7/12: Ballard

Organized by the chamber of commerce.  local artists and more.  Start on the south end of Ballard and work your way up to Market Street where you will find plenty of unique restaurants and boutiques that may interest you aside from the art venues. I always like to grab a few drinks at one of the many bars and then continue on the walk.  take some friends, make a date out of it.  The nice weather is coming and there is no better place than seattle in the summer.

8/1: Fremont

so many things to do in Fremont and the vibe is just great.  grab some food, get a drink, check out the Lenin statue and the Troll under the Aurora Bridge.

Fremont Parade!
